Emergency Fuel Surcharge

The Rhode Island General Assembly passed Senate Bill 01-0978, as amended, which was enacted on July 13, 2001 as Public Law Chapter 307.

This law amends R.I.G.L. §39-12-13 and requires the Administrator of the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers to implement a gasoline price emergency surcharge program allowing taxi companies and towing companies to assess a surcharge, per fare or towing job, in an amount to be determined by the Administrator, during periods when it is determined that the average price of gasoline in this state exceeds one dollar and fifty cents ($1.50) per gallon."

Additionally, the bill required the Administrator of the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers to implement a similar diesel emergency surcharge program for ferry companies operating within Rhode Island when the average price of diesel fuel exceeds one dollar and twenty cents ($1.20) per gallon.
